The Perfect View of Mesopotamia Starts at Zinciriye Madrasa

Mardin’in tarihi siluetinde önemli bir yer tutan Zinciriye Medresesi, yüzyıllara meydan okuyan ihtişamıyla hem tarih meraklılarının hem de turistlerin ilgisini çekmeye devam ediyor.

The Zinciriye Madrasa, which occupies an important place in the historical silhouette of Mardin, continues to attract the attention of both history enthusiasts and tourists with its splendor that has stood the test of time for centuries. Built in 1385 by Artuklu Sultan Melik Necmeddin Isa, the madrasa is also known among the people as the “Sultan Isa Madrasa.”

 Located at the foot of Mardin Castle and rising in a dominant position over the city, the Zinciriye Madrasa is known as one of the important educational centers of its time. The madrasa stands out not only as a place of religious education but also as a structure where scientific studies were conducted. According to legends, the madrasa was also used as an observatory (astronomical observatory) for a period.

The structure, which attracts attention with its stonework, offers an elegant example of classical Islamic madrasa architecture with its mosque, tomb, fountain, and student rooms. In particular, the stone arches, domes, and decorations give visitors a sense of the splendor of the past.

 In addition to its historical and cultural value, the Zinciriye Madrasa is among the most visited structures by both local and foreign tourists today. The madrasa, which hosts both photography enthusiasts and history lovers, is considered one of the structures that best reflect the spirit of Mardin.
